Malcolm John “Mac” Rebennack Jr., aka Dr. John, began writing songs, playing for recording sessions and producing sessions in the 1950s. He was still in his teens. New Orleans recording artists Earl King and Huey “Piano” Smith influenced and encouraged his songwriting.Rebennack and producer-arranger Harold Battiste developed the Dr. John the Night Tripper concept, which made its debut with 1968’s
 
“Gris-Gris” album, while they were living in Los Angeles. Other New Orleans talent in L.A., including Plas Johnson, Jessie Hill and Shirley Goodman, contributed to the project.  Dr. John is the winner of 6 Grammy Awards and member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.  Dr. John (Mac Rebennack) performs New Orleans R&B, funk, psychedelic, standards and mardi gras revue music.  His biggest hits are Right Place Wrong Time, and Same Old Same Old.
 
A prolific recording and touring artist for decades, Dr. John won his most recent Grammy award in 2013 for the Dan Auerbach-produced “Locked Down.”
